They were invented for a reason, people sometimes use terms or words instead, why end a sentence with "son" for instance?

agreed with the poster below, sometimes a emoticon or X is needed to show the tone of sentiment of the text message.

For example

I'm up for losing all my money on the horses today

or

I'm up for losing all my money on horses today ;-)

I made a conscious decision to embrace them, 12 years ago. My life has improved in every conceivable aspect since.

You have to master the Art though. If You can't use them at a pro level, You're better off not using them at all.

I always do an emote in a message. Texts can be easily misunderstood and a smiley or winky at the end clarifies the intent.
